WHAT IS THE MOST ADEQUATE CONCEPT ABOUT ANISOTROPHY APPLIED ON GEOSSYNTHETICS MATERIALS? IS THE MICROSTRUCTURE IMPORTANT TO TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION ON THE HETEROGENITY DEGREE ?
This text brings a polemic discussion about
geotextile’s microstructure. Is the anisotrophy important to take into consideration in the geotextile’s functions?
Some authors have observed the anisotrophy degree as a function of the fiber distribution and fabrication process. Others think that the concept used to structural engineering in rigid materials can be adaptated to geosynthetics.
The problem consist in take into consideration the voids that appeared in the geotextile’s microstructure and as they interacting with non-woven fiber distribution.
Rigid materials have different comportaments because the void is not a important factor in the molecular structure of them. The geotextiles have another behavior with the voids in your structure. They have the aleatory (to the non-woven fabrics) distribution and a considerable quantity of area fixed with voids.
This property brings some particular characteristics of geotextile´s behavior according with the function in use. To filtration and drainage functions, for example, the anisotrophy degree is a important factor to take into consideration because the liquid flow depends on the void quantity, resulting different outflows according the void geotextile’s distribution.
Thus, the article upper a little discussion about the different positions about the quantification of the anisotrophy degree of the geotextiles and as it is taking into consideration in the design of this geossynthetic materials. A comparison with old concepts used in different engineering materials too is discussed in this text.
